A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR GRASSROOTS CLUBS.

From the 2026/27 season, the FA is introducing new formats like 3v3 for U7s and delaying 11-a-side games until U14. These reforms are designed to boost player development – but for clubs already battling volunteer shortages and funding gaps, they could also bring serious challenges.
Here’s what you need to know – with some tips on how you can turn these challenges into opportunities!
Volunteer Burnout
The new 3v3 format at U7 level means more teams, more coaches, and YET more admin. For example – a club with 30 under seven players may need to organise TEN teams instead of five or six under the current 5v5 structure.
Facility Pressures
Smaller-sided games means you’ll probably need more pitches. A typical U7 3v3 match requires a 20x30m pitch – half the size of a standard 5v5 setup. For clubs relying on council-owned fields, that means tighter schedules and more pitch-sharing headaches.
Parental Pushback
Some parents won’t be thrilled about changes like no goalkeepers in younger age groups or replacing throw-ins with pass-ins. Expect some hearty, strongly worded grumbles from traditionalists!
Financial Strain
Redesigning training programs, buying smaller goals, and funding additional coach training will all hit club budgets. The FA’s own research shows grassroots clubs contribute £15.9bn annually to their communities – yet few have the reserves to absorb these costs.
